Route 49

Dirk Slagter was invited by Lenny Schröder to present a selection of his work in her studio in Almere Poort during ROUTE 49. His series of 19 thumbtacks, crafted in porcelain and gold leaf, illustrates the transformation of a thumbtack into a stink bug, a group of striking insects. In French, stink bugs are called “punaises,” which allows the sculptures to represent the transition from animal to object — or the reverse.

As a biologist, nature is a significant source of inspiration for Slagter. This is clearly reflected in his work, in which both intricate details and captivating forms are carefully rendered, while the piece as a whole carries an underlying message.

Lenny Schröder works in her studio in Almere Poort, where she continues to develop an extensive series titled The Journey, which she began in 2024. This series comprises small oil paintings exploring themes of silence and introspection, as well as glass works that capture still, cooled moments within the same theme. Her most recent works are created in paper and wax.

The works of Schröder and Slagter—connected through shared observations of nature and human experience—come together in her studio during ROUTE 49.

Jos Bregman works at the intersection of nature and art. His work, presented on natureaccess.nl, sparked a collaboration with Lenny Schröder. Together, they initiated a project under the number 4267.

During ROUTE 48, their work was presented in Studio 44: a black landscape of charred wood combined with blue glass, blown into a bronze mold with a distinct texture. The result offers a shared experience of land and sky, in which the materials and forms enter into a poetic interaction.

Marianne Kemp, whose work can be viewed at mariannekemp.com, was invited by Lenny Schröder for her first ROUTE exhibition in Studio 44 in Almere Poort. Because Kemp and Schröder have known each other since their time in Amsterdam and have previously exhibited together there, the collaboration for this exhibition was a natural and intuitive choice.
